Due to the hard work of Mrs. Cunnane we will have a speaker

on Thursday, April 28, 2011.

Nicole Ortiz, Miss Maryland United States 2009,

will speak to all grades during a morning assembly.

Nicole is the founder of “No Body’s Perfect."

This is a program to increase awareness on eating disorders.

Nicole will share her own story on battling both anorexia and bulimia.

She will also offer insights on healthy living, esteem building, and positive decision making. .

The cost is $5.00 to be paid during period 5 any day from 4/4-4/8. Tickets are not sold at the door for Maryvale students.
Maryvale students may bring one female guest.
If you are bringing a guest you need to complete and return a guest permission form which may be obtained from Mrs. Meyd.

Middle School students may participate in a poster contest sponsored by the Maryland Skin Cancer Prevention Program.

Students should illustrate how and why it is a good idea to protect skin from the sun’s damaging rays. Entries are due April 11th.

Wearing of the Green at Maryvale
On Thursday, March 17th students will celebrate St. Patrick's Day with the "wearing of the green"
Required uniform dress on this date will be---------Uniform skirt, shirt and shoes.
Blazers are not required on this date.
Students may accessorize in green or in green/white/orange with tights, socks shoelaces, sweaters, jackets, sweatshirt, hair ribbons, hat, headband, pins, beads.
FACE PAINTING, HAIR COLORING, WIGS ARE NOT PERMITTED
The middle school Irish Spirit Banner will be announced via email on Thursday afternoon and the banner presented in Community homeroom.

Congratulations to the eighth grade on winning The Spirit Week Banner!

Congratulations to our 2010-2011 Letters About Literature Contest Maryland State finalists;

These students will be invited to the state awards ceremony at the Enoch Pratt Library in Baltimore on Saturday April 16th.

Sixth and seventh grade students have been invited to a mixer at Loyola Blakefield on March 4th from 7-9 pm in Knott Hall. The cost is $5.00. No flip-flops or hats are allowed

NJHS is having a door decorating contest. Each advisory group decorates their door for spirit week. The following week (February 28th through March 4th) students decide which door they like best. There will be a collection box at every door and the door with the most money gets a prize. The money collected will go to the Women's Housing Coalition in Baltimore, Maryland. NJHS

The 7th graders created genetic bugs out of marshmallows, tooth picks, map pins, push pins and jelly beans. They did such a nice job that they enjoyed feasting on leftover body parts. Thank you Mrs. Shinsky for this fun lesson!
The eighth graders have been very busy with the construction of their hovercraft models. We had our annual race in the Middle School Locker Room on Tuesday (2/15) and Wednesday (2/16). The group with the fastest average speed was Rachel Jarboe, Amanda Weis and Allie Weis with a speed of 1.55 cm/s. In second place, with a speed of 1.01 cm/s was Ebony Johnson, Mackenzie Kilduff, Zoey Aarons and Rachel Vandegrift. Third place goes to Caroline D,Ambrogi, Emma Boris, Miranda Ibello and Maggie Huey with a speed of 0.91 cm/s. Congratulations to all of the 8th graders for a job well done!
The middle school under the direction of Brianna Cimino created Valentines which were sent to Johns Hopkins pediatric oncology patients. We received a lovely thank you note from the hospital for this caring community service project.

Catholic Schools Week is January 31- February 4. Here at Maryvale, we welcome parents to visit on Tuesday, February 1st. Please join your daughter for all or part of the school day. If we open late due to the weather, we will follow the late schedules posted in the front of the agenda books. If we are closed we will welcome parents on Tuesday, February 8th. We look forward to sharing "life at Maryvale Middle School" with you. It is an exciting and wonderful place!

Some scheduling events that involve the upcoming weeks are as follows;
Friday,January 14th is exam study day. Students are not required to be in school. They should use this day to prepare for exams/tests. If they are planning to come in on this day to review with a teacher, they should contact that teacher ahead of time. On January 18, 19 & 20 students are only required to be in school during the scheduled exam/test times. Students come in regular school uniforms on these days and may bring a light snack to eat between exams/tests.
